The Stench of Politics in our ‘fundamental’ rights !
I am writing this article as an ode to Ruchika but in no way this should be taken as a sympathy for her. Since yesterday, I have purged myself with anger and sadness over the outcome of Ruchika’s case. What makes this case difference is the way the culprit ‘Rathore’ (culprit R), a once-highly ranked police officer made his way to the bank. The massive cover off this case withdrew right from the political to police to education circles. A girl molested by the cop who later drives her to suicide — what the cop gets ??? A bloody 6 month jail which is covered by an immediate bail !!!!!!!!
How ghastly it can be ? I can’t imagine the mental assassination Ruchika must have gone through everyday since the incident happened? I picture with much pain the indignation she went when she was rusticated from her school on ‘bad conduct’, her brother is sent to jail for false reasons, Ruchika seeing all this and committing suicide and then her brother immediately released and all the charges dropped ! A court trial takes 19 years and some odd 430 trials which otherwise should have taken just 3 days to investigate and hand out the verdict !
In the Haryana state where the incident took place, 3 to 4 governments change during those 19 years, the culprit R is promoted to the highest rank in the police department and further recommended for a President’s medal. Ruchika was refused the right to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) as it involved a high-ranking police officer. This case was escalated to the political ‘elite’ but no one bothered ! Four chief ministers during this 19 year period meaning four governments and no help offered to the victim while the culprit R gets promoted and promoted and promoted ! Leave this — Aradhana, Ruchika’s best friend who pushed the case forward and has been fighting for her till now had her father fired from his government post for supporting Ruchika.
I doubt the conduct of the CBI judge who handed out the judgement — 6 months and for the sole reason that the culprit R is a retired 60-year-old man ! He is a 60-year old beast who should be thrown behind the bars and not be laughing and thanking his wife for standing behind him. I really want not to get onto the character of his wife as this would just drive the focus from Ruchika.
Was the school heartless to throw out the 14-year old girl on the basis of suspicious immoral grounds? Is it correct to just tell the parent to withdraw their daughter from the college as they should ‘understand the college’s position.’ What position !!!!! A reputed school does this just to please the political and the executive hierarchy… I say the principal should also be investigated and why not?
All this tells me one thing and that is the whole system is a joke. There is no respect for the common man- it’s always has been and will be that the elite are ‘worshiped’ in our system. The common man is injured, raped, killed, looted by the rich and nothing happens… the government has its hands dirty and so dirty that it can’t even dare to take action against those who commit the crime. Law is an ass in India as rightly said by Barkha Dutt. Each and every level of strata of the executive, the political and the judiciary needs to be remedied.
Ruchika’s case has exposed the laziness of the judiciary system. A system that thrives on fat bank accounts, cant dish out the honest verdicts. Thanks to media like NDTV who exposed the case and helped it the deserved attention that it should have got 19 years back. The government should expose and correct the flaws so that no such molestation cases takes place – Let it be a position where a woman troubled walks into the police station with faith and trust and comes out after being helped.
